This catalogue documents and interprets the question: what happens when architectural
objects, usually in the form of architectural models, are presented in an exhibition

Various authors discuss this theme, illustrated by the coming together of architecture
models and minimalist room installations by Fred Sandback and design objects with
works by Dan Flavin.

Thema: Was passiert, wenn architektonische Objekte – meist Architekturmodelle –
wie Kunstwerke gemeinsam mit künstlerischen Arbeiten in einer Ausstellung präsentiert
werden? Wird Kunst zum Einrichtungsgegenstand? Werden Architektur und
Designobjekte zu Kunstwerken? So werden Architekturmodelle mit minimalistischen
Rauminstallationen von Fred Sandback konfrontiert oder Designobjekte mit Arbeiten

Artists Roberta Lima and Dorit Margreiter take up this theme in the Austrian contribution
to the Cairo Biennale in their work that will focus on the ‘Western’ perspective on
strategies of appropriation applied to Cairo as a site for experiencing cultural alterity.
Using their examination of the city and cultural contexts of Cairo as a basis, the artists
seek to create illustrative models as (re)constructions of the urban space as a mode of
investigating its power to effect and create realities.
