1840. These, then, are the leaders whom they let in, to<br />

wit, Pyrrhus son of Achilles in the van, and I Homeric and Menc-<br />

laus son of Atreus, and other leaders besides. Pyrrhus, however,<br />

it is he that was protecting all the household of the folk that<br />

betrayed the city. Now Antenor was leader before the troops<br />

and the hosting of the Greeks unto the citadel and the royal<br />

apartment and royal palace of Priam, a place wherein were<br />

biding the choice of all the leaders of the Trojans. It seemed vW t«r»~<br />

to thee that the earth would fall <strong>und</strong>er their feet because of<br />

the mightiness of the pride which they brought and the great-<br />

ness of the wrath. Then, in sooth, did Pyrrhus son of Achilles<br />

wreak his fury and his wrath and his en<strong>mit</strong>y on the Trojans.<br />

Multitudes of them fell that night by his hand. There, then,<br />

fell Panthus son of Euphorbus, chief speaker of all the Trojans<br />

after Antenor. There, also, fell Choroebus, the husband of<br />

Cassandra daughter of Priam. A stripling was he and a cham-<br />

pion and a spearpoint of battle of the north-east of the world.<br />

It was not more than a week after the warrior came till Cas-<br />

sandra was betrothed to him. Cassandra did not at all desire<br />

to be defiled, 1 but she preferred to abide in maidenhood and<br />

in chastity. Then Pyrrhus son of Achilles, the battle-soldier,<br />

remained standing before Priam's citadel, with a two-edged<br />

axe in his hand, and then there was a gate that was the L<br />

fairest and beautifullest in the world, from the various carving of<br />

every land, with a border of gold and silver and precious stone.<br />

1860. Then the soldiers who were in Priam's palace divided<br />

themselves. A troop of them they put into the doorway of the<br />

court. These began to resist Pyrrhus and the rest of the heroes.<br />

The others, however, went on the palisades and mo<strong>und</strong>s and scon-<br />

ces (?) of the citadel, and began to cast mightily at the hosts in<br />

such wise that they hurled together on them the spears and<br />

the swords and the shields and the arrows and the rocks of the<br />

stones <strong>und</strong>er foot, and the beams and planks and roofs and<br />

poles of the balconies and the plank-houses. Then they broke<br />
