1338. So that on night Nestor gathered together the kings<br />

and the captains into one assembly to counsel them to get<br />

one king over them. And it was Agamemnon in particular<br />

whom he urged them to get, forasmuch as the host had<br />

great prosperity and good fortune there while Agamemnon had<br />

been their king.<br />

1343. In the morning on the morrow the Trojans marched<br />

to the battle. They were well-nigh mad and infuriated, and<br />

they shook the earth with the greatness of the vehemence (?)<br />

and the boiling of the anger which the heroes brought with<br />

them into the battle. Then from the other side marched<br />

Agamemnon with the battalion of the Greeks aro<strong>und</strong> him. Fell,<br />

then, was the fight which the soldiers fought. Each of them<br />

had harm for the other. They yearned to pour forth the blood<br />

without . . . That conflict was a rout on this side and on that.<br />

1351. Now when noon had come, Troilus went towards<br />

the fight and gave a goal that was not unterrible, past the<br />

champions of the Trojans, in such wise that he was biding<br />

between them and their foes; and he began hewing at the<br />

heroes and severing the companies, and slaying the hosts from<br />

the breast of his own battalion, and he delivered a th<strong>und</strong>er-<br />

feat upon them, and drove them together before him to the<br />

camp as a hawk drives little birds. 1 And he stayed not from<br />

them, so that many thousands of them fell by him before the<br />

gates of the camp were shut behind them. Of the unreckonable<br />

things of this story was what fell of the heroes of Greece here<br />

by the rough play of Troilus.<br />

1360. On the morrow betimes 2 forth from their city came<br />

outside the Trojans to the battle. Then Agamemnon comes on<br />

the other side with the heroes of the Greeks aro<strong>und</strong> him. A<br />

bloody, angry, deadly, venomous fight, full of mournful wailing,<br />

is fought on each side of the combat. Vast slaughter was in-<br />

flicted on each of the two sides. The champions of valour of<br />
