Macedonians in the west to the shore of the Aegean sea in<br />

the east, in order that they might have frequent meetings and<br />

assemblies and congregations in every district, that they might<br />

have boats and barques and vessels ready, and that they might<br />

be in their armies and in their battalions in the harbour of<br />

Athens and then fare forth on one track to Troy, to take<br />

vengeance for the outrage upon them.<br />

572. Now Castor and Pollux, after hearing that their<br />

sister was carried off in elopement and flight by Trojans, went<br />

in their vessel to sea to voyage after their sister. They then<br />

coasted by the Lesbian strand, till a storm forced them towards<br />

land, and they put their vessel on shore. Then Castor and<br />

Follux passed away, and no one knows how they fared after<br />

that. But the gentiles say that they were turned into two<br />

stars, and that Gemini are their names in heaven. Apparently,<br />

however, they were drowned a drowning in the storm. Howbeit,<br />

the Lesbians were a-seeking them in boats and in vessels, and<br />

searched minutely from the estuary of their land as far as<br />

Troy, and they fo<strong>und</strong> not. Even though the Greeks had lost<br />

from that expedition only those two champions and those two<br />

points of battle, great were the loss unto them.<br />

584. Now when this news had spread throughout Greece,<br />

namely, that Helen was carried off in elopement, there was a<br />

great commotion throughout the whole of Europe from the<br />

lands of the Maeotici to the estuary of the river Rhine. That<br />

news boiled up in the whole of Greece, forasmuch as every<br />

tribe and every race therein felt the disgrace as if it had been<br />

done to themselves. So there were frequent assemblies in<br />

every tribe, and everyone's messages (?) went to the other<br />

to know when it would be fitting for them to wend on their<br />

way; and the implements of the way were gotten ready for<br />

hauberks and helmets of the Myrmidons were cleansed from
