The slaying of Uisliu's sons, 1 it was murder,<br />

At eve on -the edge of Emain.<br />

It was not long after that shameful thing<br />

That Fiacha was slain in Tara.<br />

In revenge for them, it was not soon,<br />

Gerrgenn son of Iliad was slain:<br />

And by Eogan son of Durthecht.<br />

Its title — Aithed Derdrinde re mace Uislenn 'Deirdre's<br />

elopement with Uisliu's son' — is inserted in the list of the<br />

chief-tales (prímscéla) which, according to the Book of Lein-<br />

ster, pp. 189 a , 190 b , a poet is bo<strong>und</strong> to know. And, lastly it is<br />

referred to in the so-called Annals of Loch Cé, ed. Hennessy,<br />

II 434, by Brian mac Diarmada, who compares himself in his<br />

sorrow re Deirdre tareis cloinne hUisnech do marbad abfeall<br />

an Eamuin Macha le Conchubar 2 mac Fachtna Fathaigh mic<br />

Rosa Ruaidh, mic Rudhraidhe. And it has been handled, with<br />

more or less freedom, by the following writers in English:<br />

1 Their names are mentioned in the Cath Muighe Rath, ed. O'Do-<br />

novan, Dublin, 1842, p. 206: ropad dib, ba ferrde in dal, Naísi ocus Ainli<br />

is Ardan, that is, 'of them (seil, the Ulstermen) were — the better was<br />

the assembly — Naisi and Ainli and Ardan'. They were, says O'Donovan,<br />

cousins-german to Cúchulaind and Conall Cernach — all being children<br />

of Cathbad's three daughters.<br />

2 'to Deirdre after Uisnech's children who. were treacherously killed<br />

in Emain Macha by Conchobar'.
