What makes us travel to foreign lands,<br />
or choose one city to visit over another? Psychologists<br />
argue that we are thirsty for new<br />
experiences; experiences that have always<br />
created the demand in the tourist industry.<br />
People have always sought cultural and<br />
natural attractions to experience and to a<br />
greater or lesser extent we all spend time<br />
looking for new emotions, events and situations<br />
to experience. Given that guests to<br />
<strong>Merano</strong>/Meran and its surroundings tend<br />
to return time again and again, there is<br />
even more reason for these emotions to be<br />
fully felt. Perhape it is because the landscape<br />
around <strong>Merano</strong> encourages meditation<br />
and a greater willingness to look inside<br />
of ourselves and contemplate.<br />
Our themed journey this issue focuses on<br />
prizewinning cooks in the <strong>Merano</strong> area<br />
(page 12) and tells the story of the carriage<br />
trips used in the past to cross the Alps before<br />
trains and cars ever existed (page 32).<br />
On a more sporty note, this issue has<br />
journeyed along mountain roads by bicycle<br />
(page 40), taken part in the Südtirol Marathon<br />
(page 65), and investigated endurance<br />
sports with an interview with the exceptional<br />
triathlete Edith Nieder friniger from<br />
<strong>Merano</strong> (page 62). Meditation, or a real<br />
journey into one’s soul, is what is promised<br />
by certain spiritual places (page 75), including<br />
the little chapels and other holy places<br />
around <strong>Merano</strong>.<br />
It goes without saying that <strong>Merano</strong> is well<br />
worth a visit as reflected by the success of<br />
the <strong>Merano</strong> Music Festival, now in its 25 th<br />
year (page 50), and the popularity of the<br />
<strong>Merano</strong> Thermal Baths complex. Don’t<br />
miss the article about the radon treatments<br />
provided by the Medical Spa in this oasis of<br />
health and wellbeing, right in the heart of<br />
