Georg Forster Research Fellowships – for excellent researchers from developing countries

Forster Programme supports excellent researchers from
de veloping and threshold countries (except China, India
and Turkey) carrying out research projects of relevance to
develop ment policy with research partners in Germany.
Applicants are free to choose their research project as well
as their partners in Germany. Any academic actively working
at a German research institution can become a host.

Foreign postdoctoral researchers may apply for a fellowship
lasting from 6 to 24 months, plus a subsequent return fellowship.
Experienced researchers may apply for a period of
6 to 18 months which can be divided into three blocks. Our
criteria for selection are scientific excellence as well as the
quality and viability of the proposed research project. Applications
may be submitted at any time.

nachhaltige Stärkung von Forschung und Lehre in Entwicklungsländern
– so lautet das ehrgeizige Ziel des Georg Forster-Stipendienprogramms.
Entscheidend für eine Förderung ist neben der wissen schaftlichen Qualität
die entwicklungspolitische Relevanz der eingereichten Forschungsvorhaben.
Der Transfer des gewonnenen Wissens und der angewandten
Methoden in das Heimatland des Forschers muss gewährleistet sein.
Seit einem Jahrzehnt ermöglicht das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche
Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung das Georg Forster-Forschungsstipendium
– und die Bilanz ist ermutigend: Fast 400 Georg
Forster- Stipendiaten hat die Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung in den
vergangenen zehn Jahren fördern können. Die überwiegende Mehrheit
von ihnen, rund 95 Prozent, sind nach ihrer Zeit in Deutschland in ihr
Heimatland zurückgekehrt. Dort sind sie Impulsgeber einer nachhaltigen
Entwicklung, sei sie gesellschaftlich, politisch, wirtschaftlich oder
technologisch. Zugleich sind sie wichtige Botschafter und Ansprechpartner
für den dauerhaften Austausch mit ihren wissenschaftlichen Gastgebern
sowie anderen Partnern in Deutschland.
Dieses Heft soll helfen, das Erreichte Revue passieren zu lassen, eine kritische
Bestandsaufnahme zu leisten und womöglich weitere Aufgaben
für die Zukunft zu formulieren. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn es auf Ihr

Sustainable promotion of research and teaching in developing
countries – this is the ambitious goal of the Georg Forster Fellowship
Programme. Apart from academic quality, funding decisions are based
on the extent to which the proposal submitted is relevant to development
policy. It is essential that the knowledge accrued and methods applied be
transferred to the researcher’s own country.
For a decade, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation
and Development has been backing the Georg Forster Research
Fellowship – and the results are encouraging: nearly 400 Georg
Forster Fellows have been sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation in the
last ten years. By far the majority of them, roughly 95 percent, returned
to their own countries after the stay in Germany. There they have become
a driving force for sustainable development, whether social, political,
economic or technological. At the same time, they are important ambassadors
and contacts for enduring relations with their aca-demic hosts
and other partners in Germany.
This issue is an attempt to review achievements, conduct a critical
appraisal, and perhaps formulate new tasks for the future. I
certainly hope you will find it interesting and enjoy browsing through
it.
