carmen ganzenmüller claims that she
started dealing »seriously« with bonsai only
about five years ago. as a designer she regards
herself to be influenced by ralf steiner,
gerhard Vorderwühlbecke, and uwe Zeiler,
while she learned the techniques necessary
with Christian Przybylski. Carmen won first
prize at the ntC 2009 in erfurt, and she participated
in the newcomers’ contest in the
course of the eBa Congress in Zurich. she
also demonstrated her proficiency at the
shun-ten and during the nrW Bonsaitage.
she is the business owner of Cg-Bonsai,
which hosts seminars and workshops.
I’m afraid that the ladies are under-represented in the bonsai
scene. On an international scale, the designers’ scene is defi-
nitely dominated by men. And yet they exist: power women in
the world of bonsai. At the »Bonsai Triennial«, three of them
appeared for a first-time simultaneous demonstration.
Milan Karpíšek begann sich schon als
14-jähriger für Bonsai zu interessieren und
erhielt 2006 von Václav Novák den ent-
Václav Novák und Juraj Marcinko bildet er
sich seither intensiv fort. Karpíšek liebt die
Arbeit mit Yamadoris (Kiefern, Lärchen und
Milan Karpíšek began even as a 14 year
old to care for bonsai and received in
2006 by Václav Novák was the critical
factor. 2008 was won by the Czech NTC
The national bonsai organisations elect their best design newcomers
who will subsequently compete on a European level at the »New
emerged from this contest. Which is why we had better memorise
the names of the »New Talents« present at the »Bonsai Triennial«
in Dresden-Pillnitz, from the countries represented at this event.
Internationalen gartenbau-
ausstellung in Dresden 1907 waren erstmalig in Deutschland ja-
DresDen
& BoNsai
dresden and bonsai – a very special relationship.
as it happens, it was the saxon georg Meister, in his capacity as
head gardener at court, who was not only the first german gardener
ever to set his foot on Japanese grounds; in 1692 he was also first
to publicise an article on »small trees«. at the 3rd International gar-
dening exposition in Dresden in 1907, a large number of Japanese
»dwarf trees« were to be marvelled at for the first time in germany.
When after World War II bonsai started its worldwide triumph,
again it was a man from Dresden, the gardener Wilhelm elsner,
who in the eighties of the 20th century popularised bonsai in the
east of a then divided germany.
In 2007, a new chapter of this relationship was opened. the ex-
position »100 years of bonsai in germany« set an internationally
acknowledged highlight. It marked the first international presen-
tation of artistic bonsais in germany’s east. the exposition was
organised by insiders of the young developing bonsai scene. the
days at Dresden-Pillnitz apparently formed the jump start for a
rapid development: as an immediate consequence of the event,
the number of bonsai groups active in an area framed by the
rivers Werra and neiße has almost doubled.
Be-
liche tradition geworden.
Juniperus chinensis, silvia Kadasch
this eventually lead to the foundation of the regional Bonsai
association of Central germany (Mitteldeutscher Bonsai regio-
nalverband e.V. – MBr) as a parent organisation of all bonsai
work groups and clubs in the area.
at the time, Czech and Polish bonsai enthusiasts were involved as
exhibitors, dealers and designers. to mention in particular is the roll
of Václav novák, president of the Czech Bonsai association (ČBA)
as inspirator and »development aid worker« for the bonsai groups in
Middle germany. therefore it was a great pleasure that Václav novák
supplied one of the prize-winning trees and was awarded the »Willy
Benz Honorary award« at the Federal exposition of the Bonsai Club
Deutschland e.V. in 2009 which was also organised by the MBr.
Pinus uncinata, Václav novák
Willy Benz ehrenpreis, 2009
two-way visits and reciprocal co-operation in expositions organi-
sed by either of the two associations have become a nice, almost
natural tradition. as a consequence, someone came up with the
idea of having a common exposition project. It was quickly agreed
that a series of international top-class expositions was to be initi-
ated in the area where the three countries meet. It was supposed
to represent the high quality of bonsai design in the area.
the project directly entails possibilities for cross-border personal
contacts between bonsai enthusiasts, clubs, and associations in
germany, in the Czech republic and in Poland. even though one
may think there is a language barrier because of the different
languages, the common language is »Bonsai« which all exhibitors
and visitors understand.
the 2011 Bonsai triennial held at Dresden-Pillnitz is the launch
event of this series of expositions where the countries involved
will take turns on an annual basis, with the association of the
host country organising the event.
the MBr as this year’s host is delighted to attract, on top of
designers from Middle germany, from the Czech republic, and
from Poland, other renowned german and international desig-
ners for this event, namely silvia Kadasch who designed the tree
campaigning for the Bonsai triennial on posters and flyers and
also on the internet.
as during the 2007 exposition, Pillnitz Castle in Dresden, built in
a »chinois« style, will provide an appropriate setting.
Bonsai and dresden – still a very special relationship.
