Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy,
Germany, and Spain, 1918–1936
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao 22. 2.– 15. 5. 2011
Aus den Ruinen des 1. Weltkriegs wiederauferstanden, besann
Art in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, 1918–1936 diesem Revival
in Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie, Architektur, angewandter Kunst
until 13. 3. 2011
Rising from the ruins of World War I, European art and culture
returned to the classical past, seeking tranquility in order and
enduring values. Featuring work by Pablo Picasso, Giorgio de
Chirico, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Chaos and Classicism:
Art in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain, 1918–1936 presents this
revival in painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, decorative
art, and fashion. The exhibition traces the renewed interest in
classical aesthetics from a desire to overcome the horrors of the
war to its use as propaganda for totalitarian regimes. The Bilbao
presentation features a selection of works by Spanish artists.
The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and
New York, 1914–18
Peggy Guggenheim Collection 29. 1.– 15. 5. 2011
The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914–18 (Die
Vortizisten: Rebellische Kunst in London und New York, 1914–18)
The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914–18 is
the first exhibition in Italy devoted to this London-based movement.
Spanning World War I, Vorticism was an abstract figura-
tive style, combining machine-age forms and energetic imagery.
Featuring approximately 100 works, comprising paintings, sculpture,
works on paper, photography, and printed matter, the exhibition
is coorganized by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection,
Venice; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham,
United States; and Tate Britain, London. Vivien Greene
