Was begrenzt
der halb verfallene Zaun? Die Künstlerin provoziert eine
atemberaubende Spannung. Dass sie sich aus dem Instrumentenkasten
des Surrealismus bedient, ist offensichtlich,
aber es wäre auch nur eine Erklärung. In jedem Fall gelingt
Although the name was not exactly associated with “genius
German painter” right from the start, the brilliantly insane
documenta 12 from 2007 definitely made the name Monika
Baer known to a wider crowd. In the mid 1980s, Baer attended
the Art Academy in Dusseldorf where she crossed
paths with painter Dirk Skreber (here on the 1st floor). Once
there, she found herself confronted with conceptual art,
video installations and plenty of theoretical education. But
what about painting? How did one learn that? She decided
to go her own way, seeing painting not as something static,
but rather as something in constant development. Even in
her early works which decorate the Grand Executive Suites,
it is clear that these paintings long to be explored on more
than one level. The delicate and colourful pieces are filled
with questions. What is happening in that little pink house
in the forest? What is the broken fence enclosing? The artist
successfully evokes a breathtaking suspense in the viewer. It
is obvious that Baer paints by the rules of surrealism, but that
does not suffice to answer all the questions her art raises.
While her style is surrealistic she is turning away from it nonetheless.
In any case she undoubtedly succeeds in letting her
paintings tell a story. The way she paints is quite modest in
its character, but her art leaves a big impression nonetheless.
Perhaps it is due to the fact that the pictures are daring
and refuse to follow the mainstream, while still being charming
to the viewer.
