Was passiert darin?
When staying in the Maybach Suite, caravans might not be
the first thing you think about; however, Eberhard Havekost
manages to give them a chic and modern flair in his paintings.
Scenarios of boredom are a recurring theme in his
work, made interesting by the modern and two-dimensional
painting style. Havekost, one of the most influential artists
in contemporary Germany finds the material for his art in
photographs that he has either found or taken himself. He
mostly paints insignificant situations or things taken out of
its normal context with subjects such as trains, houses, junk
cars, boring facades and yes, even caravans. He creates
suspense in his pictures, while the sequence of the different
works of art sets the pace and seems to be telling a story.
But the questions of “how” and “why” are up to the viewer to
answer. For Havekost it is about perception, everyday norms
and subjects that have lost all originality. He is considered
among many to be an important chronicler of the attitude
towards life that could be experienced in the late 20th century
and it is therefore no coincidence that his pieces are now
exhibited in famous museums across the world. Eberhard
Havekost has proved time and time again that if a subject
is refined and has something to say about the present, then
there is a chance for the art of painting.
