Automatic 3D Code Reader
A machine Vision system for the automatic recognition of 3D embossed natural
digits.
Some a-priori knowledge about the surface
geometry and the number and the size of the
digits are essential for the correct proceeding
which is divided into the following steps:
• A global surface modelling is performed using discrete
orthogonal polynomials
• Seperation of the global surface geometry
• Digit segmentation using a correlation mask
• Digit identification using reference digits and shift
invariant correlation.

In some cases material tracking in the steel industry can
only be realized by embossing codes. This codes have
to be human- and machine-readable. The main problem
for the machine vision system are the rough surfaces on
which the code is located. Consequently conventional
OCR methods fail.
The aim is to seperate the embossed digits, which are
the local anomalies, on rough surface resulting from
oxyacetylen cutting of the block.
