Expansion injection moulding<br />
Expansion injection moulding is an innovative injection moulding technique to<br />
fill the thin-wall parts with small shot weights.<br />

The process cycle of the expansion injection moulding<br />
can be described in pvT-diagram. After the<br />
mould has been closed the melt is compressed to<br />
the maximum pre-compression pressure (pK) in<br />
the injection unit with closed shut-off nozzle. By<br />
opening the shut-off nozzle, the compressed melt<br />
is allowed to expand which leads to a decrease in<br />
pressure at screw antechamber from maximum<br />
compression pressure (pK) to an end pressure<br />
(pE) as a function of expansion time (t). These<br />
pressure differences generate higher volumetric<br />
flow rates to fill the cavity.<br />

For the injection moulding of thin wall parts with<br />
wall thickness less than 0.3 mm and flow length/<br />
wall thickness ratio up to 450:1 a new injection<br />
moulding technique called expansion-injection moulding<br />
(ENGEL X-Melt) was developed by Engel Austria<br />
GmbH, Austria. The main feature of this process is<br />
the separation of the melt compression and injection.<br />
At first the melt is compressed to maximum<br />
compression pressure of approximately 1800 to<br />
2500 bar in the space in front of the injection screw.<br />
For that, the injection unit is equipped with a controllable<br />
shut-off nozzle or the mould with hot runner<br />
shut-off nozzles.<br />
