Heavy metals contamination<br />

Determination of anthropogenic versus geogenic contamination of heavy metals<br />

in soil adjacent to steel plant.<br />

Chromium and Nickel are heavy<br />

metals. Their toxicity depends upon<br />

their oxidation states. For example, Cr<br />

(VI) is 100 times more toxic than Cr<br />

(III) and soluble compounds of Ni (II)<br />

are also toxic. So their toxicity (causing<br />

cancer and skin allergy) makes<br />

the knowledge of their speciation in<br />

environmental samples more crucial.<br />

These elements can already be present<br />

in the soil geogenically or their<br />

concentration level may rise up due to<br />

anthropogenic activity in any area.<br />

The soil of Judaskreuzsiedlung, <strong>Leoben</strong>, which is adjacent<br />

to steel plant (Voest-alpine) is under study. It is observed<br />

that the soil in that area contains generally more than<br />

20% magnetic particles. The Curie point measurement by<br />

MFK1-FA showed that these magnetic particles are mainly<br />

magnetites (Fe 3 O 4 ). These magnetites are consisted of spherical<br />

structure (seen under Electron Microprobe Analyzer) of<br />

different diameters in the range of µm. Calcium, silicon and<br />

manganese are attached to the surface of these spherical<br />

magnetites. The study to find the possibility of other heavy<br />

metals attached on the surface or inside the magnetites is<br />

yet proceeding. The co-relation of magnetic susceptibility of<br />

magnetically separated particles and concentration of heavy<br />

metals in magnetically separated sample can lead to a better<br />

decision about the real, i.e., anthropogenic or geogenic<br />

source of contamination of these elements in the soil.<br />
