Modelling of SEN Region of Steel Continuous<br />
Caster<br />
This study employs Computational Fluid Dynamics methods to simulate solidification<br />
processes during continuous casting taking into account motion of nonmetallic<br />
inclusions and gas bubbles.<br />
Current studies include numerical implementation<br />
of the solidification model and further research<br />
work using OpenFOAM (Open Source CFD software).<br />
An interaction between turbulent flow in the mold<br />
and growing mushy zone is poorly investigated<br />
field. Thus it also became one of the main points<br />
of interest in this project. Numerical modelling of<br />
the solidification is really important and permits<br />
to carry out parametric study of real production<br />
processes.<br />

During steel continuous casting non-metallic inclusions<br />
and argon gas are brought into the melt pool<br />
of the caster. If inclusions become trapped in the<br />
solidified strand they can cause undesired defects<br />
in the final casting product. Avoiding this particle<br />
entrapment into the solidifying shell is important to<br />
improve the quality and purity of the continuous cast<br />
product.<br />
Due to the high temperatures and pressure it is hard<br />
to study described processes inside the caster. At<br />
this point numerical simulation comes to aid.<br />
