Mitte is the power centre of Germany. The Bundestag, Federal Assembly, Chancellery, lobbyists, organisations, embassies, the media – they are all in Mitte (wich means “centre”). A glance at the area’s history shows that the powerful and in- fluential have long felt at home here – both the Stadtschloss (City Palace), the centre of Prussian might, and the Palast der Republik, the seat of the East German parliament were once in the vicinity, as well. The Rotes Rathaus (Red Town Hall), the office of the mayor of Berlin, is also located in the borough, near the Television Tower.

Im Gegensatz zu manch anderer Innenstadt ist Mitte ein Ort des Wohnens geblieben, der sich dazu großer Beliebtheit erfreut. Das gilt besonders für einen der ältesten aller Kieze der Stadt rund um den Hackeschen Markt. Hier hat sich eine eigene Mitte-Kultur entwickelt, die sich von denen in Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg oder Prenzlauer Berg unterscheidet und sich besonders „hip“ gibt. Das spiegelt sich auch in einer großen Zahl an Möglichkeiten, abends auszugehen, und da bildet dieser Ortsteil wirklich das gesamte Berliner Spektrum ab – vom erstklassigen Restaurant mit internationaler Anerkennung Unter den Linden über experimentierfreudige Küchen am Hackeschen Markt bis zum asiatischen Schnell- imbiss am Bahnhof Alexanderplatz. Und Einkaufen ist ein großes Thema: Das Angebot war immer schon groß und wächst noch mehr, denn neben dem an vielen Stellen renovierten Alexanderplatz entsteht, wo einst nur ein Parkplatz war, ein neues und großes Einkaufszentrum. Das Grundstück befindet sich in bester Berliner Innenstadtlage mitten im Regierungszentrum der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Der Reichstag als Sitz des Deutschen Bundestages, das Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, in dem die Abgeordneten und die Fraktionen ihre Arbeitsräume haben, das Presse- und Informationsamt der Bundesregierung und weitere Bundestagseinrichtungen befinden sich in direkter Nachbarschaft. Das Gebiet wird daher auch als Parlamentsviertel bezeichnet. Auch die Nähe zu be- 8 . . . and people live here too. Unlike many other city centres, Mitte has remained a popular residential district. This is particularly true of the area around Hackescher Markt, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods. A unique, especially “hip” Mitte culture has developed here that is distinct from that of Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg. The large number of bars, cafés and restaurants in the area reflects Berlin’s entire gastronomic spectrum – from first-class, internationally acclaimed restaurants on Unter den Linden to creative fusion cuisine around Hackescher Markt and Asian fast food at Alexanderplatz station. And the neighbourhood is a shopper’s paradise, too. The selection has always been excellent, but it’s become even better with the opening of a big new shopping centre on the site of a former car park adjacent to Alexanderplatz – which is well on the way to complete renovation itself. The property has a prime location in the city’s government district. The Reichstag building, seat of the German parliament, Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, where the MPs and parliamentary parties have their offices, the government’s press and information department and other parliamentary institutions are all in the immediate vicinity. Thanks to the central location, major academic and research institutes affiliated with Humboldt University and Charité hospital are also within walking distance.
