Abstract
Vascoda is a new portal for scientific information that is online since August
2003. (www.vascoda.de) It is a central access point for all fields of research. The
portal allows interdisciplinary searches as well as (in a later version) complex
navigation and browsing. Vascoda allows access to all types of documents:
born-digital as well as digitised and print materials. The service includes
full-texts, link-collections, databases, subject-specific search engines and more.
The portal is also a nucleus in the creation of a German Digital Library.
The BMBF (Federal Ministry for Education and Research) and the DFG
(German Research Society) are working together to make this portal a reality
and to benefit from a joint venture instead of sponsoring two or more competing
portals.
More than thirty German institutions – with co-operation partners worldwide
– are working together to realize an actual one-stop-shop for all scientific information.
The partners of this project are libraries as well as information centres
and other institutions providing quality academic information.
The first release was realized through the co-operation of the network of subject-based
Virtual Libraries, the Electronic Journals Library as well as the Information
Alliance. In a joint effort, these institutions make it possible for users to
combine the search for information with the access to full-text documents.
The central idea is to make it easy to obtain trustworthy quality information
through a variety of complex searching and browsing options.
This paper will introduce the aims and services of vascoda and of the elements
that contribute to vascoda.
