The Last Great Acquisitions
The loss of the German colonies, the world economic crisis, the
de clining interest in economic plants, a concentration on plants
growing in the wild and a change of priorities led in the inter-war
period to individual scientists increasingly undertaking collecting
trips, even if often only in the Mediterranean, for example to the
little known Albania, to Macedonia and Turkey.
An expedition by Ludwig Diels in 1933 to Ecuador was related
to plans for a large-scale, but never realised flora of the Andean
lands, which was to have complemented in a westward direction
the Flora Brasiliensis completed in the Berlin Botanic Garden and

Furthermore, the institution acquired the collections of others,
for example seeds, cuttings and preserved plants collected by the
private scholar Joseph Rock from then totally unknown areas such
as East Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan. The largest ever collection
acquired by the institution was the 200,000-specimen ‘Ausserrheinisches
Herbarium’ of the Naturhistorischer Verein der Preussischen
Rheinlande und Westfalens (Natural History Society of the
Prussian Rhineland and Westphalia), which arrived in Dahlem
in 1936. The exchange of seeds, herbaria and publications via the
established network of contacts with like-minded institutions and
collectors brought further accessions from all over the world. HWL
