1 January 2005: The garden’s ‘beat’ structure, which had existed
for more than a hundred years, is reorganised and consolidated as
‘cost centres’. For the first time only two skilled workers are firmly
assigned to each beat, other employees being part of flexible work
groups. Services such as technical maintenance, logistics and the
care of the garden’s decorative areas are outsourced to an external
company.

„Langen Nacht der Wissenschaften“.

Nacht der Wissenschaften (Long Night of Sciences).
1. August 2006: Beginn der Renovierung des Großen Tropenhauses,
geplant vom Büro HAAS Architekten und begleitet
von der Technischen Abteilung der Freien Universität
Berlin. Die Mittel kommen zu einem Großteil aus dem
Umweltentlastungsfond der EU.

House, designed by HAAS Architekten and supported by the Freie
Universität’s technical department. The work was financed to a
large extent out of the EU’s environmental relief fund.
Januar 2007: Der BGBM übernimmt im Netzwerk europäischer
Saatgut-Banken ENSCONET die Erstellung von
Prioritätenlisten für die Einlagerung gefährdeter Arten

in der kontinentalen Bioregion Europas. Die Dahlemer
Saatgutbank für seltene und gefährdete Arten besteht zu
diesem Zeitpunkt aus über 1300 tiefgekühlt gelagerten Positionen,
im Revier Erhaltungskulturen werden fast 2000
Akzessionen kultiviert.
January 2007: In the network of european seedbanks ENSCONET
(European Native Seed Conservation Network), the BGBM assumes
responsibility for drawing up the list of priorities for the preservation
of continental European endangered species. The Dahlem
seedbank for rare and endangered species consists at the present
time of over 1300 items in deep-frozen storage; almost 2000 accession
are being cultivated in the ex-situ conservation ‘beat’.
