1. Juli 1955: Erich Werdermann wird zum Direktor des
BGBM und zugleich zum Lehrstuhlinhaber und Leiter des
Instituts für systematische Botanik und Pflanzengeographie
an der Freien Universität ernannt. Eine Personalunion
hatte in dieser Form zuletzt 1945 bestanden.
1 July 1955: Erich Werdermann is appointed director of the
BGBM and at the same time chair and director of the Institut für
Botanik und Pflanzengeographie (Institute for Systematic Botany
and Plant Geography) at the Freie Universität. The two posts had
last been united in this form in 1945.
Januar 1956: Beginn der Arbeiten an den ersten Dioramen
der Schauabteilung, finanziert durch eine Spende
der Sparkasse Berlin West. Vorbild sind die Dioramen im
„Haus der Natur“ in Salzburg.
January 1956: Work begins on the first dioramas, financed by a
grant from the savings bank Sparkasse Berlin West. The dioramas
are modelled on those in the Haus der Natur in Salzburg.
Januar 1958: Mit Haus I (Palmen, Cycas, Marantaceen) ist
die gesamte Kultur- und Gewächshausanlage bis auf das
Große Tropenhaus wieder hergestellt. Die Mittel zum Wiederaufbau
stammten zum Teil von der Berliner Klassenlotterie.

January 1958: With ‘Haus I’ (palms, cycases, arrowroots), the reconstruction
of the entire hothouse and greenhouse complex apart
from the Great Tropical House is now complete. The work had been
partly financed by the Berliner Klassenlotterie.
1. April 1958: Hans Melchior wird nach dem Ruhestand
Erich Werdermanns zum kommissarischen Leiter ernannt.
1 April 1958: Following Erich Werdermann’s retirement, Hans
Melchior is appointed acting director.
