Der lange Umzug · The long move<br />
26. Juli 1897: Kaiser Wilhelm II. unterzeichnet als König<br />
von Preußen das „Gesetz, betreffend das Charitékrankenhaus<br />
<strong>und</strong> den botanischen <strong>Garten</strong> Berlin“. Das Anleihegesetz<br />
sieht vor, die erforderlichen Baumittel sowohl für<br />
die Verlegung des Botanischen <strong>Garten</strong>s als auch für den<br />
Neubau der Charité aus dem Verkauf des Gr<strong>und</strong>stückes<br />
des alten Botanischen <strong>Garten</strong>s zu bestreiten. Der Umzug<br />
des Botanischen <strong>Garten</strong>s von Schöneberg nach Dahlem,<br />
seit 1888 wiederholt diskutiert <strong>und</strong> seit 1895 im Auftrag<br />
des preußischen Kultusministeriums geplant, beginnt.<br />
26 July 1897: Emperor William II, King of Prussia, signs the ‘law<br />
concerning the Charité Hospital and the Berlin Botanic Garden’.<br />
This loan law provides for the financing of the necessary construction<br />
f<strong>und</strong> both for the resiting of the Botanic Garden and for<br />
the new Charité building out of the sale of the gro<strong>und</strong>s of the old<br />
Botanic Garden. The relocation of the Botanic Garden from Schöneberg<br />
to Dahlem, repeatedly discussed from 1888 and planned<br />
on the order of the Prussian Ministry of Culture from 1895, is set<br />
in motion.<br />

Herbst 1897: Dampfpflüge beginnen mit Erdarbeiten auf<br />
einem 42 ha großen Gelände, das aus dem Gr<strong>und</strong>besitz<br />
der Königlichen Domäne Dahlem herausgelöst wurde.<br />
Autumn 1897: Steam ploughs begin work on an area of 42 hectares,<br />
which had been cut out from the estate of the royal Dahlem<br />
‘domain’.<br />
Frühjahr 1899: Beginn der Bepflanzung der geographischen<br />
Anlagen im Freiland <strong>und</strong> Baubeginn für die Wohnhäuser<br />
des Direktors Adolf Engler, des Unterdirektors<br />
Ignatz Urban, des <strong>Garten</strong>inspektors Karl Peters <strong>und</strong> der<br />
Gehilfen.<br />
