Continent“ die Grundlagen unseres Wissens über die
Flora der nördlichen Andenländer. Wieder in Berlin und
immens fleißig, verfasste Kunth nach dem natürlichen System
eine Gesamtdarstellung aller einkeimblättrigen Pflanzen
(ohne Orchideen) auf 4066 Seiten.
Several researchers were involved in processing the botanical collections
that had been gathered by Alexander von Humboldt and
Aimé Bonpland on their expedition through the northern parts of
South America, Mexico and Cuba. Humboldt himself produced
the general parts of his travel account, including the Essai sur
la géographie des plantes, which is today seen as a milestone in

After Willdenow’s premature death and disagreements with
Bonpland, Carl Sigismund Kunth became Humboldt’s most important
collaborator. In 17 years of work in Paris he identified
the bulk of the collections and summarised his results in extensive
de luxe volumes. Richly illustrated with coloured plant plates of
outstanding quality from the best ateliers of the French capital, his
seven-volume Nova genera et species plantarum and the Mimoses
et autres plantes légumineuses du Nouveau Continent laid the
foundations of our knowledge of the flora of the northern Andes.
Back in Berlin and still as hard-working as ever, Kunth compiled
a complete overview of all monocots (except the orchids) according
to the natural system in 4,066 pages. HWL
