The tradition that began with Willdenow of uniting in one post
the botany professorship at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and
the directorship of the ever expanding Royal Botanic Garden and
Museum placed a massive strain on all incumbents. In the period
under review, this applied as much to the full professors appointed
to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität – Adolf Engler and Ludwig
Diels – as to those appointed to the Freie Universität. On the other
hand, the uniting of professorship and directorship in one post
gave the incumbents the opportunity to familiarize their students
on a personal basis with the collections, the library and other features
of the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum. Of course the
scope of individual teaching depended on the ever changing curricula
and personal research foci. Given these manifold strains,
it is not surprising that only L. Diels as full professor took up a
position as dean within the university´s self governing body.
Alongside the full professors, several extraordinary professors,
readers and lecturers contracted to the Botanical Museum also
taught, thus enabling a rather extensive teaching programme to
come about. From the 1960s the programme was supported to a
significant extent by professors appointed to the biology faculty of
the Freie Universität. The actual core of academic teaching in the
Botanical Museum, however, was constituted by the supervision of
diploma theses and dissertations by the in-house faculty members.
No comparative research has been done on the professional paths
of the male and female scientists who received their doctorates here
between 1910 and 2010. Botanists achieving doctorates in the
last 25 years are now active in Germany, New Zealand and the
