Regional Projects
In contrast to several like-minded institutions, Dahlem did not
develop a strong regional research focus nor its own separate flora
project for a larger region. After the Second World War, schemes
were dedicated to the plant life of two relatively small countries: a
Flore analytique du Togo, completed in 1984, and the Flora de la
República de Cuba, which started appearing in instalments from
1998 and is still far from being completed, and which in the now
usual spirit of co-operation relies almost exclusively on external
collaborators.
The interconnectedness of the Botanic Garden and Botanic Museum
becomes clear through its participation in the flora projects
of similarly oriented institutions. The list is long: the institution’s

scientists were and are equally involved in the Flora Neotropica
as in Hegi’s Flora von Mitteleuropa, the Flora Hellenica as well
as the Flora Iranica, each of them dealing with individual plant
groups. Contributions to the six named floras have been written up
in five different languages, which shows what demands regional
floras make on scientists employed at the Botanic Garden and Botanical
Museum. HWL
