The Road to the Internet
In line with similar institutions, the Berlin Botanic Garden and
Botanical Museum possessed right up until the Second World War
internally available card indexes for the collections, for example
for the library holdings, but no complete inventories in published
form. There was just one exception: in 1938 the so-called Dahlemer
Handliste was published, in which the collections cultivated
in the Botanic Garden were recorded without information about
provenance, but with an indication of their location in the individual
‘beats’.
With the reconstruction of the library in the 1950s, new accessions
were for the first time reported in the so-called Berliner Gesamtkatalog
(Berlin Union Catalogue), providing a mirror image of
the internal catalogue beyond the library’s walls. Neither a second
edition of the Dahlemer Handliste nor a complete inventory of the
preserved plants ever materialised. In the past decade, the considerably
expanded data set on the living collections has largely been
made available in electronic form, although up until now it has
only partly been made available externally.

new perspectives: since 2000 all new library accessions are indexed
in an electronic catalogue on the internet. At around the same time
work began on scanning in many thousand herbarium specimens
and indexing them via an electronic catalogue on the internet. The
very highest picture quality was combined with advanced functionality,
so that the Berlin herbarium holdings can be searched from
all over the world. On account of the enormous costs, however, only
a small part of the herbarium has up until now been captured in
this ambitious form. Through the development of more efficient
methods of herbarium digitisation, it should in future be possible
to digitise large parts of the collection at reasonable costs. HWL
