The Road to Documented Wild Origin
When the Botanic Garden – both the greenhouses and the open
land – was first planted out material was derived from different
sources. Stock from the Botanic Garden in Schöneberg, samples
from seed exchange with comparable institutions, plants gathered
from their natural habitat, additional purchases from tree nurseries
and commercial market gardens. The living plants were labelled
with their scientific names, increasingly complemented by
their German names and information about the distribution of the
species; an indication of the plant’s exact origin was not provided.

Starting from the mid-1970s much stricter criteria were applied
to incoming collections of living plants, and material was only
taken from natural habitats that were precisely known. At the same
time living plants of unknown origin began to be systematically
replaced by those of documented wild origin which are – plant
by plant – additionally and very precisely identified with a ninefigure
accession number.
Today the Botanic Garden presents itself as an amalgam of
plants of unknown and fully documented provenance. The scientific
value of the latter is incomparably higher. This was accompanied
by a more consistent documentation of the living collection by
means of exactly verified, numbered, herbarium specimens in the
‘garden herbarium’, and a complex database with a great deal of
data on the plants. HWL
