Zur Ausstattung der seit Jahrhunderten existierenden
Samenstube gehört seit den frühen Neunziger Jahren die
Gefriertruhe, in der man Samen meist deutlich länger
am Leben halten kann. Der nächste Schritt ist bereits in
Planung: der gezielte Aufbau einer Samenbank, welche
den Garten und das Herbar ergänzen soll und den Vorteil
bietet, tiefgekühltes Material auch nach Jahrzehnten mit
einigem Erfolg wieder „zum Leben“ erwecken zu können.

Species Conservation
That very rare plants were cultivated in the Botanic Garden right
from the outset is self-evident. Precise data in the sense of today’s
‘Red Lists’ for endangered species, however, didn’t yet exist at the
point of the garden’s relocation to Dahlem.
Driven by a growing concern about the threat to the plant world
posed by multiple human interventions, the institution has since
the 1960s co-operated with other comparable institutions around
the world in the targeted conservation of rare and threatened species.
Specially labelled and mostly cultivated in the non-public areas,
these species are looked after by specific gardeners dedicated to
the task. The successful reintroduction in the 1990s of threatened
taxa into their natural habitat in the Berlin-Brandenburg region

In the early 1990s the seed room, which had already existed for
centuries, acquired a new piece of equipment: a chest freezer, in
which seeds can generally be kept alive longer. The next step is
already being planned: the targeted construction of a seed bank,
which is to complement the garden and the herbarium and offers
the advantage of being able successfully to bring back to life deepfrozen
material even decades later. HWL
