Twenty half-page woodcut emblems by Bernard Salomon within ornamental arabesques. Contemporary limp vellum, four pigskin ties, later ms. spine title heightened in gold; in a morocco case. CHF 43 000.– Only edition of this most sophisticated emblem book, «la plus rare production de l’imprimerie de Tournes» (Brun). These highly unusually philosophic emblems pair quotidian domestic settings with ornate explanatory verses charged with allusions that barely touch on the scene before the viewer. Here the contrast of the image and its following elucidation creates surprise — «l’une des caratéristiques essentielles de l’emblème.» (Châtelain). Thus, in the picture, Vigilance tends a cooking pot, distaff and spindle to hand, while in the text, she inspires poets and rulers to ensure the common weal. (In the vast majority of emblems, this tension is front-loaded in the disparity of the image’s brief introductory title and its unexpected iconography.) In both sets the highly imaginative ornamental frames are cut with their emblem on the same block. The frames are of unusual proportions. The horizontal elements of each are not identical but complimentary in design and of equal visual «weight», while the vertical elements mirror each other and are also of equal weight. (Typical frames are of unequal weight, e.g., tops narrower, bottoms wider.) Overlooked by Praz, Landwehr and Adams et al. Six copies located worldwide: none in Swiss public collections. In original condition in its first binding, from the libraries of Louis Lebeuf de Montgermont (Cat. (1914) 287), baron de Lassus (Cat. (1955) 19) and Bernard Malle via Heilbron.
