First published in 1921 Rene Maran’s<br />
controversial novel is a scathing critique<br />
of French colonialism and consi<strong>der</strong>ed the<br />
first great literary work about Africa by a<br />
black author. Its literary excellence, evoking<br />
a rural environment with a sensitive<br />
depiction of village society, was rewarded<br />
by a Prix Goncourt.<br />
