describes and illustrates (in the 87 woodcuts) the remarkably wide variety of glassware, furnaces and other equipment used for distillation. With the owner’s signature on the title-page of the Augsburg physician and medical author Veit Riedlin (1628–1668), and a couple of brief passages underlined in ink. In very good condition, complete with the two blank leaves and with good margins (the foredge nearly untrimmed) and with only occasional marginal water stains or spotting. A thoroughly illustrated classic of medicinal distillation and wine-making. – Adams G-529, G-530; BMC STC German, p. 358; Durling 2081; Oberlé, Fastes 913; Waller 5320; Wellcome 2785; Wellisch, A 32.8 & B 2.2. Classic botanical bibliography, rare ‹London› copy Haller, Albrecht von. Bibliotheca botanica. Qua scripta ad rem herbariam facientia a rerum initiis recensentur. London, Carol. Heydinger, 1771. 2 volumes. 4to. Contemporary half calf, gold-tooled calf with red morocco title-label. CHF 3400.– Rare and extensive bibliography of botanical literature by the distinguished Swiss botanist, anatomist, physiologist and poet, Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777). The titles have been arranged chronologically, from the Greeks to Linnaeus. The titles marked with an asterisk were found in Haller’s private library. «One of the eighteenth century’s best bibliographical exhibits … tremendously impressive in its erudition, its analyses of the contents of important volumes, its biographical notes, its useful though imperfect index, its attractive Zurich typography» (Hunt). «Throughout his scientific career, Haller thoroughly studied everything that had been published on any given subject; it is therefore natural that he turned his systematizing instincts toward bibliography» (DSB). All reference-works give as place of publication Zurich, whereas our copy has London on the title-page. Hunt describes a «Zurich-copy» but mentions the existence of copies with London on the title, «but the body of the work is identical». – Some minor dampstains on the first and last leaves of both volumes; binding in good condition, with the edges slightly worn. Good copy. – Hunt 622; Pritzel 3727; Stafleu & Cowan 2313. Asher Rare Books 7
