A Byron rarity Suppressed by
the court of chancery
[Byron, George Gordon, Lord]. One of the few
surviving copies of the suppressed, unfinished
volume of Byron’s early correspondence with
his mother and with R. C. Dallas. [London,
Charles Knight and Henry Colburn, 1824.]
4to; in excellent condition, the pages entirely
untrimmed, recent full light-brown morocco by
Sangorski & Sutcliffe. CHF 19 500.–
First (suppressed) edition. Dallas proposed to
publish these letters after Byron’s death, but was
forestalled by the poet’s executors. He died in 1824,
shortly after the injunction was issued. His son A.
R. C. Dallas took the manuscript to Paris where
it was issued by Galignani. A long ‹Preliminary
Statement› to the Paris edition provides details of
the hearing in Chancery and the suppression of the
book in England. It was nearly finished and had
been advertised, but as a result of the injunction
it was never completed. It ends abruptly mid-sentence
on page 168 and there are no prelims.
