Fascinating contemporary German pigskin binding
with clasps and metal corners. One of the rarest
editions of the famous book. Nice copy, just slightly
uniformly brown, minor defects. – Baumeister 84,

Piranesi, Giambattista. Della magnificenza ed
architettura de’ Romani…(con) Osservazioni
sopra la lettre de M. Mariette. Roma, 1761–
1765. Elefant Folio (mm 610 × 450); Double
engraved titlepage by Piranesi, full page portrait
of Clemente XIII engraved by Cunego and
Piranesi, pagg. (2) with dedication, 212 with 38
full page copperplates (4 folded and 8 doublepage);
titlepage, pagg 23 with 6 text vignettes and
3 halfpage plates. Half vellum rebacked with
angles, original boards. Ex-libris consul Smith.
Splendid copy with distinctive provenance of
the major theorical work of the famous architect,
uncut with full margins. CHF 21 600.–
Piranesi had been inspired by the publication of Le
Roy’s, «Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la
Grèce», where he was stating that roman art was a
bad imitation of Greek one; in Piranesi’s opinion
Greeks copied the Etruscans, who followed the
Egyptians. Piranesi created Della magnificenza de
architettura de’ Romani hoping to inspire others
to use ancient Roman ideas and forms to create
a new style of architecture. – Waterstain in outer
margin from pag. 16 to 137 and from plate XXXVII
to the end. – Smith, English consul in Venice from
1744 onwards, has been a very important collector.
In about 1750 he sold to king George III part of
his collection; the rest was sold in auction after his
