wood engravings were used both for the present<br />

Johannes Stumpf (1500–1578), was a Swiss historian,<br />
theologian and topograph. He took a large<br />
part in the Réforme, and wrote the Chronicle that<br />
bears his name. – Born in Bruchsal near Karlsruhe,<br />
he studied in his hometown but also in Strasbourg<br />
and Heidelberg. In 1520, he entered the or<strong>der</strong> of<br />
the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Or<strong>der</strong><br />
of Hospitallers and was sent some months later<br />
to Freiburg in Breisgau. In 1522, he was ordained<br />
priest in Basel and became preceptor at Bubikon<br />
(North of Rapperswill). In 1529, he took part in<br />
the first Kappel War, and the same year, married<br />
the first of his four wives, a daughter of Heinrich<br />
Brennwald (1748–1551), the famous writer of a<br />
Swiss chronicle in 4 parts made between 1508 and<br />
1516. Brennwald transmitted him the passion for<br />
writing and history, and Stumpf un<strong>der</strong>took historical<br />
studies, making wide researches, travelling<br />
among others in Engelberg (in 1544) and through<br />
the Valais to which he devoted a large part of his<br />
work Gemeiner loblicher Eydgnoschafft Stetten,<br />
Landen und Voelckeren Chronick wirdiger thaaten<br />
Beschreybung which was published in 1548 in Zurich.<br />
He converted to Protestantism and retired in<br />
Zurich.<br />
