ISO/IEC Guide 62, 65 and 66 (and the IAF interpretation thereof), ISO/IEC 17011, ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/IEC/17020 standards.
Gesetz: SANAS was established in terms of Section 21 of the Companies Act, 61 of 1973, registration number 1996/00354/08, operating under its own
constitution. It is an independent non-profit organization. SANAS is directed and legally represented by a Board of Directors whose members are appointed by
the stakeholders and the Department of Trade and Industry.
SANAS is sanctioned by the South African Government as the single national accreditation body in South Africa operating within the defined scope of
laboratory, inspection and certification body accreditation. We also perform GLP and GCP monitoring functions and have signed the mutual exchange of data
SANAS is a non-profit section 21 company
MoUs with the Department of Trade and Industry and also with the Department of Labour. SANAS also has a cabinet decision from Government that
recognises SANAS as the national accreditation body. SANAS is currently in the process of developing a government wide agreement.

We liaise with PAC and also APLAC. Additionally, we have a strategic alliance with IAAC and NATA of Australia.
SANAS charges for all accreditation activity. There is a scale of charges which are available from our website
The South African government also funds all international activity. They also provide seed funding for new programs. Additionally, they also provide funding to
projects of national importance which may not be viable otherwise (e.g. GLP and OECD membership).
Only one accreditation body in the country that covers the above scope of activity. There is therefore no need for a co-ordination body.
SANAS has 8 managerial/
professional staff supported by 11 administrators giving a total permanent staff complement of 19 for all programs.
The number of contracted assessment staff are currently (at the time of the evaluation) thirty five (35) Lead Assessors, with fifteen (15) others in training, one
hundred and three (103) Technical Assessors and thirty two (32) technical experts. To support the technical credibility of accreditation activities, SANAS has
several specialist technical committees (STCs). These determine special technical criteria for specific areas.
The total number of full time staff is 31. Assessors are contracted in as needed for assessments.
