develop if grazing and burning were removed.
5 Restoring and creating native woodlands
The main emphasis on afforestation in Ireland has been the planting of exotic conifers. Initially,
planting concentrated on the lower slopes of siliceous uplands and inter- and under-planting of stands
of broadleaf woodland on old estates, especially old oak woodlands, with Scots pine, European larch,
Norway spruce and Douglas fir. Subsequently there was a shift to planting the most marginal land
