New mixing unit enters
operation following fire
Ellerbrock Obtains New
Position Within the
Marangoni Group
In early July Ellerbrock GmbH’s new compound mixing
unit entered operation in the new location of Henstedt-
Ulzburg, north of Hamburg, Germany. A six million euro
investment has injected a massive amount of state-ofthe-art
technology into the facility, enabling it to take
over a whole new role within the Marangoni Group –
one that can benefit both the German operation and the
Italian company as a whole. When talking with TYRES
& ACCESSORIES, Marangoni Retreading Systems
managing director Giuseppe Ferrari outlined the new
structure of cooperation within the Group.
On 22 March 2008 a fire, which the official police report attributed
to a “technical defect”, broke out in the Ellerbrock factory-
’s mixing department in Henstedt-Ulzburg. This event initially
appeared to spell disaster for the site: In the immediate aftermath,
the facility’s adjacent tread and Ringtread production unit had to rely
upon compound sourced from Italy. The onset of the global recession
at this time was, however, in a way a stroke of good fortune for
the Marangoni Group – reduced market demand meant the collateral
damage that would have resulted from the increased logistics costs
were held in check.
At the same time Marangoni also received a blessing in disguise
in that following the fire it was presented with the opportunity to establish
a completely new facility equipped to meet the needs of
modern industrial production. Only the foundations of the old mixing
unit were still usable, and in addition to the building itself requiring
reconstruction every item of equipment, including the carbon black
silos, needed to be completely reinstalled. At the centre of the six
million euro investment is an automatic Banbury mixer with a 310
litre chamber volume and – unique within the retreading industry –
interlocking rotors with variable distance. Such a mixer is otherwise
only found in the new tyre industry, and even then is not universally
utilised. Furthermore, all parts of the facility are “state-of-the-art”,
stresses Giuseppe Ferrari, who together with Matthias Leppert, joint
managing director of the German operation. Current plant operation
(24, hours a day, five days a week) since the start of July facilitates a
monthly production of around 1,000 tonnes of retreading material.
This is double the output the former facility could accommodate
through continuous, seven days a week operation. The new plant
also requires less staff than the 20 or so needed to run the old mixing

am Standort in Henstedt-Ulzburg in Betrieb nehmen.
Durch die sechs Millionen Euro teure Investition
erfährt das Werk einen immensen Modernitätsschub
und kann auch innerhalb der Marangoni-Gruppe eine
komplett neue Rolle übernehmen, von der letzten Endes
der deutsche Standort und die italienische Gruppe
insgesamt deutlich profitieren können. Im Gespräch
mit der NEUE REIFENZEITUNG erläutert Giuseppe
Ferrari, Geschäftsführer des Marangoni-Geschäftsbereichs
Retreading Systems, die neue Struktur der
Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der Gruppe.
Als am 22. März 2008 wegen eines „technischen Defektes“, so
der offizielle Polizeibericht, ein Feuer in der Mischerei der Ellerbrock-Fabrik
in Henstedt-Ulzburg ausbrach, wirkte dies zunächst
wie ein Unglück, das vorwiegend negative Folgen für den
Standort haben würde. Zunächst war dem auch so, mussten doch
die in der benachbarten Laufstreifen- und Ringtread-Produktion genutzten
Mischungen allesamt aus Italien herangeholt werden. Dass
die globale Wirtschaftskrise gerade jetzt zuschlug, war in gewisser
Weise „Glück“ für die Marangoni-Gruppe, hielt sich der Kollateralschaden
durch die höheren Logistikaufwendungen doch in Grenzen.
Gleichzeitig hatte Marangoni ebenfalls Glück im Unglück, konnte
man doch nach dem Feuer des vergangenen Jahres die Mischerei
komplett neu einrichten und sie den aktuellen Anforderungen einer
modernen industriellen Produktion anpassen. Von der alten Mischerei
war ausschließlich die Sohlplatte noch brauchbar, die komplette
Hardware inklusive der zur Mischerei gehörenden Silos für Ruß etc.
mussten neu installiert werden, von dem Gebäude ganz zu schweigen.
Im Mittelpunkt der sechs Millionen teuren Investition steht der
automatische Banbury-Mischer mit einem Kammervolumen von 310
Litern und den ineinandergreifenden Rotoren mit variablem Abstand,
die in der Runderneuerungsbranche einmalig seien. Einen solchen
Mischer finde man ansonsten nur in der Neureifenindustrie und
auch dort nicht überall. Darüber hinaus seien alle Anlageteile „State
of the Art“, wie Guiseppe Ferrari betont, der gemeinsam mit Matthias
Leppert auch Geschäftsführer der deutschen Gesellschaft ist. Im
aktuellen Schichtbetrieb (fünf Tage à 24 Stunden) arbeiten seit Anfang
Juli zwölf Mitarbeiter an einer monatlichen Produktion von
rund 1.000 Tonnen Runderneuerungsmaterial. Dies ist ein doppelt so
hoher Output wie die alte, im vergangenen Jahr abgebrannte Anlage
