Chemical and water consumption for the production of a T-shirt
As a case, the chemical and water consumption for the production of a T-
shirt in cotton was examined. The difference between an eco-labelled and a
non-eco-labelled T-shirt was also examined.
An eco-labelled T-shirt which uses organic cotton (which only the Nordic
Swan directly requires) has a chemical consumption of approx. 500 g whereas
a non-eco-labelled T-shirt (without use of organic cotton) has a chemical
consumption of between approx. 655 grams and 1040 grams.
For the production of a cotton T-shirt (of 250 g), approx. 37-225 liters of
water (150-900 liter/kg) are used for the production itself. In addition to this,
much larger water consumption for cotton cultivation comes. This
consumption varies from 576-24,400 l/kg in literature.
Ecolabelling Denmark has informed that they do not expect that there is a
difference in the water consumption for production of eco-labelled and noneco-labelled
textiles or T-shirts. There are no requirements to the water
consumption at the production of eco-labelled T-shirts.
