Phthalates
Brominated flame retardants
Various metals (As, Sb, Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, V, Zn, Ag)
Impregnation agents (per- or polyfluor compounds, silicone
compounds)
Organostannic compounds
Various other organic compounds (such as formaldehyde,
nonylphenol/nonylphenolethoxylates (NP/NPE), aliphatic
hydrocarbons etc.)
Washing out of chemicals
Only a few studies examine how large a part of the chemicals available in
unwashed textiles that are washed out during a normal household wash. The
few available studies show the following picture (see table 0-2).
Eco-labels and health labels
The eco- and health labels below are found on the Danish market today. In
this project, there is furthermore an overview over the dealers/producers
which sell the different labels (see Tabel 5-3):
Organic labels (GOTS , IVN, Soil Association, KRAV and
DEMETER)
Health labels (Øko-Tex 100)
Eco-labels (the EU Flower, the Nordic Swan, the Swedish ”Bra
Miljöval” (Good Environmental Choice), Øko-Tex 1000)
Other labels (Fairtrade)
The requirements of the different eco- and health labels on the use of
chemicals or content of chemicals in the finished textile have been compared
to the examinations of the washing out of chemicals. On this background it
can be concluded that a large number of the chemicals which can be found in
textiles are largely washed out at household wash. For a number of the
chemicals, no information is found on whether these can be washed out at
household wash. Substances which are not washed out or are washed out to a
limited degree at household wash are especially:
Phthalates
Some heavy metals
Antibacterial agents
Phthalates can also be avoided by buying textiles with the different described
eco- and health labels. On the contrary, heavy metals can only be avoided to a
certain extent through the requirements which are made to the content of
heavy metal in pigments/dyes. Only Øko-Tex 100 makes direct requirements
to the content of heavy metals in the finished textile product. Furthermore,
