Before summer this year, I
was writing emails to Winnie
in Denmark, wondering at the
same time who she is? And
who is Jens? The last week of
May I arrived to a relatively
warm, fresh, green and wellscenting
Copenhagen. What a
change after a dull and windy
winter and spring in Helsinki!
Then: Everything was to do
in a Hurry! With the blackbirds
singing on the roof, the
Det Kongelige Teater next
doors, why could one not have
a romance here instead?
We began listening to the introduction
lecture from which
I caught the extravaganza of
the word obsolescence. Charming
words could be used
more frequently. I am sure
everyone of us came home
with both professional and

personal memories of what
we experienced during the
Incredible Industry Congress.
Mine is the visit to the Diesel
House with its powerful
quick start engine, the size of
a house. Diesel House with
love - it was as in a heavy rock
concert!
All these days at the end of
May this year; good I decided
to come, to see you all, to hear
what is going on in conservation
internationally, to meet
you all who were there– my
highlight of the year actually
– concerning work. Thank
you for an intriguing dinner,
thank you for an ever remembered
tango lesson! I could
have been a better teacher,
though. Instead of dancing
one could sit enthralled listening
to joyful discussions,
small talk with colleagues, eat
and drink in a very solemn
surrounding. It was great fun
to dance to Klezmer music!
The biking system in Copenhagen
had a huge impact on
me. Which pace and charm,
no wonder the thought was as
it was – this is culture. With
black bikes, some equipped
with children’s seats, and each
and everyone driving according
to the same discipline.
What a glorious sight - slow
you ride on the streets like
swans, one after each other,
no hurrying, no bullying
around, no overtaking, unless
really necessary. Bikers with
true love – what grace, calm
and peace. Then, no wonder
there are not many Danish
drivers in Formula one races,
which I think can be seen
from the biking culture. In
Finland we have world famous
car drivers, and that
must ascend from the people’s
nature, see how we Finns drive
our bicycles, we are awfully
