TESTING AND REFINEMENT OF THE LANDING MODE OF<br />
TELEVISION SYSTEM FOR NAVIGATION AND OBSERVATION<br />

The Wide-Angle Cameras (WAC) of the Television System for<br />
Navigation and Observation (TSNN) will be used during the landing on<br />
the surface of Phobos for imaging and real-time image processing and<br />
transmission as well as for landing site selection and for back-up<br />
measurements of the s/c altitude and velocity. The algorithms and<br />
software implementing these functions were tested and refined during<br />
experiments on a test-bed where two WAC cameras were imaging on<br />
computer monitors a succession of stereo-images of rough surfaces with<br />
the resolution and stereo-parallax corresponding to the planned s/c<br />
descent trajectory.<br />
