OECD Review of Migrant Education: Denmark<br />

2010<br />

While an overall framework <strong>for</strong> teaching Danish as a second<br />

language is in place, further ef<strong>for</strong>ts are needed to<br />

standardise, structure and mainstream the language<br />

support offered across all municipalities and school types.<br />

The main focus of language support currently remains on<br />

developing proficiency in basic communicative Danish in the<br />

earlier grades. This is not sufficient <strong>for</strong> immigrant students<br />

to gain academic achievement on a par with their Danish<br />

peers.<br />

To strengthen the language support offered, further ef<strong>for</strong>ts are<br />

needed to standardise the provision of language support,<br />

integrate language and content learning, and value and<br />

validate proficiency in languages other than Danish<br />
