Tangentplanen er grafen for en lineær funktion
kaldet lineariseringen til f i (a,b).
Approximationen
L(x,y) = f(a,b) + fx(a,b)(x − a) + fy(a,b)(y − b)
f(x,y) ≈ f(a,b) + fx(a,b)(x − a) + fy(a,b)(y − b)
kaldes den lineære approximation af f for (x,y) ≈ (a,b).

Eksempel
f = x 3 + x 2 y 3 − 2y 2
I punktet (1,2) er den lineære approximation
fx = 3x 2 + 2xy 3 , fy = 3x 2 y 2 − 4y
f(1,2) = 1,fx(1,2) = 19,fy(1,2) = 4
f(x,y) ≈ 1 + 19(x − 1) + 4(y − 2)
