It is easier to get social assistance and grants when a diagnosis is present. Even though the
legislation is built on the notion of equality and rejects the individualistic and diagnostic
criteria for granting I find in practice that the diagnosis plays a central role for obtaining
assistance and grants. The societal consequences of the medical concepts as the main aspect
for understanding disability are discussed.
I find the use of medical understanding of disability constitutes an instrumental reduction of
the complex notion of disability and interpret this as the system colonising the lifeworld. I
also criticize the social work for adapting this reductive view of disability.
