Built by Marstrands Mek. Verkstad, of Harstrand, •<br />

Sweden, for A/S Kosangas, Copenhagen, the singlescrew<br />

motorship "Rasmus Tholstrup", which is arranged<br />

for the earriage of butane and propane gas, is a<br />

most interesting vessel and will undoubtedly attrået '<br />

the attention of naval architects throughout the<br />

worldo<br />

The design of the ship was based on a preliminary i<br />

drawing prepared by Mr. Martin Nielsen, naval archi-•<br />

teet of Copenhagen. \<br />

The construction of the "Rasmus Tholstrup" is in<br />

accordance with the requirements of the Bureau Yeri-;<br />

tas, for the highest classification of that society. •<br />

The principal dimensions and other leading characteristics<br />

of the vessel are given in the accompanying<br />

Table.<br />

The design has resulted in a vessel of pleasing<br />

modem appearance. The hull form terminates at a<br />

well-raked stem forward and a cruiser stern aft.<br />

The striking feature of the ezternal appearance is, '•<br />

of eourse, the arrangement of the gas-carrying tanks,<br />

which extend over the midship length of the vessel.<br />

These tanks, twelve in number, are housed in beddings<br />

at the tank-top level, and are capable of carrying<br />

320 tons of liquified gas. It may be mentioned<br />

that the containers were tested to a pressure<br />

of 28 atmos.<br />

For handling the cargo, there are two electrically-driven<br />

compressors and two pumps.<br />

Comfortable aceomodation is arranged towards the<br />

after end of the vessel, and there is a spacious,<br />

well-eguipped falley.<br />

Aluminium alloy has ~been chosen for the bridge<br />

erection, as well as for the after mast and lifeboats.<br />

The deck equipment includes a windlass, winch<br />

and capstan, all of whieh are hydraulically operated.<br />

The navigating departement is provided with a<br />

wide range of the most up-to-date equipment, inclu- ;<br />

ding wireless telephony, wireless direction-finder, !<br />

radar apparatus, gyro compass, echo sounding gear,<br />

and a clear-view screen.<br />

The vessel is propelled by an M. A. K. singleacting,<br />

four stroke cycle, eight cylinder Dieselengine,<br />

capable of developing 520 BHP. at 375 r.p.m.;<br />

The engine is directly coupled to the propellershaft<br />

Two 38-kW. Diesel-driven generators are installed,<br />

while there are also two generators, one of<br />

18-kW. and the other of 3-kW.<br />
