Built by Marstrands Mek. Verkstad, of Harstrand, •
Sweden, for A/S Kosangas, Copenhagen, the singlescrew
motorship "Rasmus Tholstrup", which is arranged
for the earriage of butane and propane gas, is a
most interesting vessel and will undoubtedly attrået '
the attention of naval architects throughout the
worldo
The design of the ship was based on a preliminary i
drawing prepared by Mr. Martin Nielsen, naval archi-•
teet of Copenhagen. \
The construction of the "Rasmus Tholstrup" is in
accordance with the requirements of the Bureau Yeri-;
tas, for the highest classification of that society. •
The principal dimensions and other leading characteristics
of the vessel are given in the accompanying
Table.
The design has resulted in a vessel of pleasing
modem appearance. The hull form terminates at a
well-raked stem forward and a cruiser stern aft.
The striking feature of the ezternal appearance is, '•
of eourse, the arrangement of the gas-carrying tanks,
which extend over the midship length of the vessel.
These tanks, twelve in number, are housed in beddings
at the tank-top level, and are capable of carrying
320 tons of liquified gas. It may be mentioned
that the containers were tested to a pressure
of 28 atmos.
For handling the cargo, there are two electrically-driven
compressors and two pumps.
Comfortable aceomodation is arranged towards the
after end of the vessel, and there is a spacious,
well-eguipped falley.
Aluminium alloy has ~been chosen for the bridge
erection, as well as for the after mast and lifeboats.
The deck equipment includes a windlass, winch
and capstan, all of whieh are hydraulically operated.
The navigating departement is provided with a
wide range of the most up-to-date equipment, inclu- ;
ding wireless telephony, wireless direction-finder, !
radar apparatus, gyro compass, echo sounding gear,
and a clear-view screen.
The vessel is propelled by an M. A. K. singleacting,
four stroke cycle, eight cylinder Dieselengine,
capable of developing 520 BHP. at 375 r.p.m.;
The engine is directly coupled to the propellershaft
Two 38-kW. Diesel-driven generators are installed,
while there are also two generators, one of
18-kW. and the other of 3-kW.
