84. Status and trends of Zostera marina in the Limfjorden<br />

Seagrass species are considered the main key indicator for water quality in Danish coastal waters.<br />

Therefore eelgrass population dynamics have been on focus for the past decades. Eelgrass is known<br />

to be sensitive to a wide variety of environmental factors such as nitrogen load, oxygen availability,<br />

light availability or physical stress. Nevertheless at present it has not been found a specific<br />

parameter which predicts/correlates/determines the fitness of eelgrass in all its geographical<br />

distribution. Therefore, we postulate a multifactorial system rather than a simple correlation to<br />

predict eelgrass development and distribution in the field. We will use the Limfjorden eelgrass<br />

population as a study case. In this multifactorial approach, all known factors affecting eelgrass are<br />

plotted and analyzed together with the current eelgrass distribution at Limfjorden. The aim of such<br />

tool it is to prospect areas with potential for eelgrass recolonization, and to try to identify the main<br />

factors affecting this concrete eelgrass population.<br />
