A heart warming story about diet<br />
change and exercise on board<br />
the danish government’s seamen’s service’s three on board fitness competitions, under the banner ”do it”, are a very<br />
important part of our work. not least because of the inability to organise events ashore. a few days ago we received a<br />
mail from captain Kay Jørgensen on board the Marie Mærsk:<br />
For several years I have suffered<br />
from obesity, and especially after<br />
my promotion, the kilos just stuck<br />
to me. As chief mate I was able to keep<br />
the weight somewhat in check, due to<br />
the tank inspections and the numerous<br />
trips up and down to the holds. But<br />
after promotion, when work took on an<br />
administrative nature, it was not so easy<br />
to keep my<br />
health under<br />
control. The<br />
weight climbedsteadily<br />
upwards,<br />
and on New<br />
Year’s morning<br />
<strong>2010</strong> my weight was 140 kilos.<br />
I could not live with that and made the<br />
decision to radically change the situation.<br />
Over the years I have tried various diets<br />

and the nutrition programme and it<br />
benefited my self-confidence a lot<br />
The onboard exercise competitions<br />
”Do it” have been increased over<br />
the last couple of years and we<br />
experience a high level of activity.<br />
You can participate in three categories<br />
– bycycling, rowing and running.<br />
In order to be part of the competition<br />
you must complete a distance<br />
of at least 25 km during your assignment<br />
period. When you have<br />
accomplished 100 km you will obtain<br />
with little effect; quite the contrary in<br />
fact. So, in addition to signing up to the<br />
local gym, I also contacted the Danish<br />
Weight Consultants. They immediately<br />
offered advice and assistance, and felt<br />
that I could lose 50 kilograms in just 18<br />
months.<br />
I was obviously sceptical but followed<br />
their advice about diet change etc. With<br />
great support from<br />
my wife and my personal<br />
trainer in the<br />
gym I was very clear<br />
about my situation.<br />
It is important to set<br />
down realistic goals<br />
and work from there.<br />
Even after the first week, I had lost<br />
five kilograms through exercise and the<br />
nutrition programme and it benefited my<br />
self-confidence a lot.<br />

For every 25 km you have covered<br />
you will also obtain a share. At the end<br />
of the year there will be a draw among<br />
all the shares and the winners will<br />
receive various fine prizes.<br />

Seamens Service you must state the<br />
following:<br />
When I signed onto the Marie Mærsk<br />
I continued my personal project undeterred,<br />
and I received a lot of support from<br />
the steward, Allan M. Hansen. He has<br />
arranged low fat meals during my entire<br />
tour, although I have sometimes enjoyed<br />
the Saturday dinner and barbecue<br />
evenings.<br />
I can only stress the importance of<br />
a healthy and varied diet and plenty of<br />
exercise to everyone. So I urge everyone<br />
to attend onboard exercise classes.<br />
My efforts onboard have reduced my<br />
weight by a total of 26.3kgs. Now I am<br />
no longer in any doubt that I’ll reach my<br />
goal of losing 50 kg in 18 months.<br />
I would urge all to focus on their<br />
diet, but also to exercise and seize<br />
the opportunities available. It may be<br />
worthwhile.<br />
