Hvem var Cacilie?<br />

Ifglge gammel tradition er hun skytshelgeninde for sangere og musikere. Cacilie var en ung<br />

jomfru i det gamle Rom, som pi sin bryllupsdag omvendte sin mand, Valerianus, og senere sin<br />

svoger, Tiburtius, til den kristne tro. Det var i en tid, hvor man fbrfulgte de kristne, si de blev alle<br />

tre domt til doden. valerianus og Tiburtius blev halshugget, mens cacilie skulle pines til dode.<br />

Hun blev muret inde i en badstue, som blev overophedet, si der blev si hedt som i en bageovn.<br />

Den voldsomme varme skulle ombringe hende. Til alles forblofTelse gik hun tre dggn syngende<br />

omkring, trods den hgje temperatur. Det blev se besluttet, at hun skulle ud igen afbadstuen og<br />

halshugges. Men bgdlen kunne ikke - trods ihterdigt forspg - skille hovedet fra hendes hals. Tre<br />

dage efter d6de hun af sine lidelser.<br />

Der findes lorskellige beretninger om Cecilies sidste dage, den ene mere grufuld end den anden.<br />

Hendes grav menes fundet i Roms katakomber.<br />

Crecilieforeninger<br />

I mange byer, ogsi i Kobenhavn, har der eksisteret C:tcilieforeninger, en musikfbrening, der<br />

arrangerede koncerter og fejrede Cecilie den 22. november, som er Cacilies dag. Det er ej heller<br />

ualmindeligt, at kor opkaldes efter sangernes skytshelgeninde. Mogens Wijldike dirigerede, fBr<br />

han stiftede Kobenhavns Drengekor, "cecilie-koret" - det kor er forlsngst oplost. Et kor i Arhus<br />

kalder sig i dag Ceciliakoret.<br />

Creciliekoret. Kgbenhavn. 1999<br />

Ceciliekoret, som synger pi nerverende CD, blev stiftet 19'12 knyttet til Filips Kirke pi<br />

foranledning af kirkens davzerenede menighedsrAd. Filipperkoret hed det og begyndte som<br />

drengekor i overensstemmelse med den tradition, at drenge synger til gudstjeneste om spndagen.<br />

Men allerede iret efter blev der optaget piger i koret; mange 6r var forholdet det, at var der 20<br />

piger, var der 5 drenge. Koret sang ved gudstjenester og koncerter. Som tiden gik, blev drengene<br />

og pigerne voksne - koret blev til et blandet kor. Nu afdode Gunnar Haastrup-Vig bad i 1979 koret<br />

opf6re Hlindels Messias ved to koncerter. Han Onskede, dette v:erk i hans levetid skulle opf'@res<br />

pi Amager af et Amagerkor; han betalte, hvad det kostede. Og det skete - hans opfordring blev<br />

optakt til en rakke tilbagevendende Messias'er. Siden kom ogsi Johannespassionen pi korets<br />

repertoire tilligemed Bach-kantater som "Christ lag in Todesbanden" (I dodens bind vor Frelser<br />

16) og "Ein'f'este Burg ist unser Gott" (Vor Gud, han er si last en borg). I 1994 ophorte


samarbejdet med Filips Kirkes menighedsrid, og koret tog sit nuverende navn. Disse vaerker er<br />

blandt dem, der har veret optgrt af Caciliekoret:<br />

I I 979 fandt fgrste korrejse sted - den gik til Fer6erne, koncerter i Klaksvig og Thorshavn.<br />

1 980 rejste koret til Saarland og opf-Orte Gades Elverskud pi konservatoriet i Saarbri.icken -<br />

samarbejdet med Klaus Jerndorff begyndte med denne rejse.<br />

En indbydelse fra musikchef'en ved Peterskirken f@rte til, at koret i I 9U3 kom til Rom og Assisi.<br />

Oslo, Trondheim, Lincoln, Kalmar, Bremen, Hannover, Warszawa, Stuttgdrt, Freiburg, Salzburg,<br />

Wien, Menton, Verona har vrret mil for korets koncerttourn6er, sidst var det Sankt Petersborg,<br />

Ceciliekoret rejste til ijuni 1999, afslutningskoncert i universitetets festsal Sankt Hans alten - og<br />

efterfplgende sejltur pii floden Neva.

Kantate til Sankt Ciccilies dag. komponeret af Frederik Magle.<br />

Gunnar Svensson onskede i l99tl. at Clcciliekorets koncert pir Crcilies dag det irr skulle runtnte<br />

en uroptorelse. Alet f'or havcle han hort Flederik Magles julekantate "Et nyfbdt barn lbr evi-qhed<br />

Gud". da dette blev opfirrt ved en koncert i Messiaskirken. Han besluttede at bestille en Cicciliekantate<br />

hos Flederik Magle. Inridleltid skulle kantaten have en tekst. og Gunnar Svensstl.t fandt.<br />

det kunne vrre nrorson.lt at lii en helt ny tekst sat i nrusik. En af san-eet'ne i kolet gav ham den icli<br />

at sporge lben Krogscial. Gunnar Svensson var bekendt nred en del af hendes digteliske prodLrktion


lben Krogsdal sagdeja til at digte teksten, og Frederik Magle accepterede at sette den i musik.<br />

Missa Sanctae Caeciliae. komponeret af Dan E. Nielsen.<br />

Gunnar Svensson blev bekendt med Dan E. Nielsens komponistvirksomhed gennem nogle<br />

vierker, som komponisten fiemfgrte ved en orgelkoncert i Vor Frelsers Kirke. Pd det tidspunkt var<br />

samme komponist i f:erd med at skrive en messe tbr solo og blandet kor. Gunnar Svensson syntes<br />

om musikken. Dan E. Nielsen kaldte sit verk "Missa Sanctae Caeciliae", og han dedicerede det til<br />

Ceciliekoret. Sangerne i koret kom til at holde af tonesproget, som indstuderingen skred frem.<br />

Det var med gliede. koret gav denne komposition sin t'Orste opfgrelse. og det var fgrste gang.<br />

koret havde en uropfgrelse pd sit repertoire.<br />

A H1,nin to Saint Cecilia, komponeret af Benjamin Britten.<br />

Komponisten. 1913-76, var som komponist. pianist og dirigent en central skikkelse i nyere<br />

engelsk musik. Blev iste r kendt for sit "War Requiem" fra 1961 og for det musikp:rdagogiske<br />

verk "A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra", 1 946. "A Hynrn to Saint Cecilia" er blot en af<br />

de mange kompositioner. som er tilegnet hende, som beskytter og inspirerer sangere og musikere.<br />

Det kan anfBres, at Henry Purcell sidst i 1 6-hundredetallet skrev et nyt vrerk hvert lr til Sankt<br />

Caecilies dag, og slir man op i et musikleksikon, er rrkken af Cecilievierker uendelig.<br />

Motetten: Hear my Prayer. komponeret af Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.<br />

Komponisten, I U09-47, regnes sammen med Fr. Chopin og Robert Schumann for den rornantiske<br />

klassicismes hovedskikkelse. Han var en fiemragende dirigent, hvis store fbrtjeneste var, at han<br />

gjorde J.S. Bach kendt derved, at han opfprte Matthauspassionen. Bach var efier sin dpd giet i<br />

glemmebogen, Mendelssohn genopdagede han. Mendelssohn levede og opholdt sig i Leipzig.<br />

hvor han I 843 lagde grunden til et musikkonservatorium. Blandt lererne her var danske Niels W.<br />

Gade.<br />

Rekken af Mendelssohn kompositioner er enorm - flest kender harn miske. tbrdi han i vrrket<br />

"En skersommernatsdrpm" skrev Cen bryllupsmtrrch, som mange brudepar har gledet sig over at<br />

hgre som udgangsmusik efter deres vieise.<br />

Man kunne kalde motetten, det her handler om. Caciliemusik med tanke pi C6cile Jeanrenaud.<br />

Born on 13 January 1975 outside Oslo, Norway.<br />

Educated at the Norwegian Academy of <strong>Music</strong> with professor Ingrid Bjoner. Currently studying at<br />

the Opera Academy, Copenhagen, with prof'essor Kirsten Buhl-Mgller.<br />

Previous appearances with, among others, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic<br />

Klaus.Ierndorff<br />

Klaus JerndorfT, pianist and organist, was born on l6 September 1932 in Frederiksberg. Initially,<br />

he made a ca.reer as a concert pianist after studying with John Frandsen, the organist and<br />

conductor, Herman D. Koppel, the pianist and composer, at the Royal Danish Academy of <strong>Music</strong>,<br />

as well as mervellous Nadia Boulanger in Paris. After his ddbut he received the Art Critics'<br />

Honortry Award. He has travelled widely as a soloist and as a chamber musician with Per<br />

Bokelund, the violinist, in the U.S.A., Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Australia. In terms of<br />

heredity, Klaus Jerndorff faced a severe challenge as the then sole male descendant of the<br />

Jerndorff artist family of three painters in unbroken succession. Fortunately, his paternal<br />

grandfather, August Jerndorff, had married Betty Matthison-Hansen, daughter of the cathedral<br />

organist in Roskilde, so that Klaus was able to embark upon the musician's profession. As it is<br />

hard to make a living as a pianist in Denmark, he entered the advanced church music course of<br />

the Academy of <strong>Music</strong>, and being too old for the soloist class, he was allowed to graduate ln<br />

<strong>Music</strong> Pedagogy, majoring in organ and ear training. In his everyday activities, Klaus Jerndorff<br />

enjoys the benefit of having studied under outstanding professionals such as Finn Reiff, Finn<br />

Hpffding, Finn Videro and Leif Kayser. With Nadia Boulanger he just managed to get a course of<br />

composition when she was a very old lady of 90 yet in full possession of her mental taculties. A<br />

splendid Conrad Christensen organ in Ansgarkirken in Migevej and the Choir of the Cecilia<br />

Institute, Ied by Gunnar Svensson, frequently profit from Klaus Jerndorff's talent as an organist<br />

and chorus master.<br />

Lise-Marie Thrane<br />

Free lance singer and teacher of singing.<br />

The girls'choir Puls, fbunded in 1993 by Mie Korp Jensen, who has graduated from the Royal<br />

Danish Academy of <strong>Music</strong> as an organist and choir conductor. Student teacher Mona Borg is<br />

attached to the choir as choirmaster and accompanist. The domicile of the choir is the<br />

Nazarethkirken in Osterbro, here the choir sings at concerts and special alTangements.


Cecilia <strong>Music</strong><br />

Who was Cecilia?<br />

According to ancient tradition, she is the patron saint of singers and musicians.<br />

Cecilia was a young virg:in in ancient Rome, who on her wedding day converted her husband<br />

Valerranus, and later also her brother-in-law Tiburtius. to the Chdstian faith. This was a period<br />

when Christians were persecuted. so the three of them were condemned to death. Valerianus and<br />

Tiburtius were beheaded. whereas Cecilia was to be tortured to death. She was immured in a<br />

Roman bath. which was overheated to become as hot as a furnace. The fierce heat was intended to<br />

put her to death. To everybody's amazement she kept walking about singing for three days and<br />

nights despite the towering temperature. It was then decided to remove her from the bath to be<br />

beheaded. In spite of persistent endeavours, however, the executioner failed to sever her head<br />

from her neck. Three days later she died fiom her sufTerings.<br />

Various accounts of Cecilia's last days are extant, one more horrifying than the other. Her tomb is<br />

believed to have been discovered in the catacombs of Rome.<br />

Cecilia Societies<br />

In many cities, as in Copenhagen, a Cecilia Society has existed, a musical society ananging<br />

concerts and commemorating Cecilia on November the 22nd, which is St Cecilia's Day.<br />

Nor is it uncommon tbr choirs to be named after the patron saint of singers. Befbre founding the<br />

Copenhagen Boys'Choir, Mogens Wcildike used to conduct the "C:tcilie-koret", now long<br />

disbanded. Today in Arhus a choir calls itself the Ceciliakoret.<br />

The Caciliekoret, Copenhagen 1999<br />

The Ceciliekoret recorded on the present CD was founded in 1972 to be associated with Filips<br />

Kirke, at the instance of the then parochial church council. The Filipperkoret was its designation<br />

at the time, and it began as a boys' choir in accordance with the tradition that boys are to sing at<br />

Sunday service. But already during the fbllowing year girls were admitted to the choiri fbr many<br />

years the ratio was 20 girls to 5 boys. The choir sang at services and at concerts.<br />

As time went by, the boys and girls grew up - the choir grew into a mixed-voices choir.<br />

In 1979 the late Gunnar Haastrup-Vig requested the choir to perform Handel's Messiah at two<br />

concerts. He wanted this work to be performed in Amager by an Amager choir within his lifetime;<br />

he was prepzLred to lbot the bitl. And this did come about - his request provided the impetus for a<br />

series of recurrent Messiah concerts. Subsequently also the St John Passion entered the repertoire<br />

of the choir, together with Bach cantatas such as "Christ lag in Todesbanden" and "Ein' feste Burg<br />

ist unser Gott".<br />

In 1994 the cooperation with the parochial church council at Filips Kirke ceased, and the choir<br />

assumed its present name. The fbllowing works are among those that have been perfbrmed by the<br />

Purcell's Ode for St Cecilia's Day (1683), Britten's A Hymn to St Cecilia and Ravel's Ronde in<br />

the Thorvaldsens Museum in the same year;<br />

J.S.Bach's St John Passion in Christiansborg Slotskirke 1998;<br />

Frederik Magle's Cantata for St Cecilia's Day in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in the same year.<br />

The first concert tours - and the latest one:<br />

1979 saw the flrst tour ofthe choir, to the Faroe Islands with concerts in Klaksvig and Thorshavn.<br />

In 1980 the choir visited Saarland, presenting Gade's Elverskud ('Elf-Shot') at the<br />

Konservatorium in Saarbrucken - the cooperation with Klaus Jerndorff began with this tour.<br />

An invitation tiom the music director ofSt Peter's Church caused the choir to come to Rorne ano<br />

Assisi in 1983.<br />

Oslo, Trondheim, Lincoln, Kalmar, Bremen. Hannover. Warsaw, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Salzburg,<br />

Vienna, Menton. Verona have been the destinations of the choir's concert tours; most recently it<br />

was St Petersburg that the Ceciliekoret travelled to in June 1999, the concluding concert taking<br />

place in the Ceremonial Hall of the University on Midsummer Eve - with a cruise on the Neva to<br />

follow.<br />

On the works:<br />

Cantata for St Cecilia's Day, composed by Frederik Magle. In 1998, Gunnar Svensson wanted<br />

the CEeciliekoret's concert for St Cecilia's day to include a first perfbrmance. The preceding year<br />

he had heard Frederik Magle's Christmas Cantata, "A Newborn Babe before Eternity God",<br />

performed during a concert in Messiaskirken. He decided to commision a St Cecilia cantafa fiom<br />

Frederik Magle. The cantata was to be supplied with words, however, and Gunnar Svensson<br />

found it would be attractive to have an entirely new text set to music. One ofthe singers in the<br />

choir suggested the idea of asking Iben Krogsdal. Gunnar Svensson was familiar with part of her<br />

poetry.<br />

Iben Krogsdal consented to write the text, and Frederik Magle accepted the task of setting it to music.<br />

Missa Sanctae Caecilia, composed by Dan E. Nielsen.<br />

Gunnar Svensson became acquainted with Dan E. Nielsen's works as a composer through some<br />

pieces performed by the composer at an organ recital in Vor Frelsers Kirke. At the time, the<br />

composer was writing a mass fbr solo and mixed voices. Gunnar Svensson took a liking to the<br />

music. Dan E. Nielsen named his work 'Missa Sanctae Caeciliae', and he dedicated it to the<br />

Ceciliekoret. The singers came to cherish its tonal idiom as the rehearsals progressed. It was with<br />

pleasure that the choir gave this composition its first performance, and it was the first time for the<br />

choir to har e a l irst performance in its reperloire.<br />

A Hymn to Saint Cecilia, composed by Benjamin Britten.<br />

As a composer, pianist and conductor, Britten (1913-76) was a central figure in modern English<br />

music. He became known in particular for his 'War Requiem'fiom l96l and for the<br />

musicpedagogical work 'A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra', 1946. 'A Hymn to Saint<br />

Cecilia' is merely one of many compositions dedicated to the lady who protects and inspires<br />

singers and musicians. In the late 17th century Henry Purcell wrote a new work for St Cecilia's<br />

day every year, antl in any sizable tlictionary of music the entries for Cecilia works are practically<br />

innumerable.<br />

'Hear my Prayer', Motet, composed by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.<br />

Together with Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann, Mendelssohn (1809-47) is considered a<br />

key ligure of romantic classicism. He was an outstanding conductor, whose crowning achievement<br />

it was to mzrke Johann Sebastian Bach known by perfbrming the St Matthew Passion. After


his death, Bach had sunk into oblivion; Mendelssohn rediscovered him. Mendelssohn lived in<br />

Leipzig, where in 1 843 he founded an academy of music. Among its teachers was Niels W. Gade,<br />

the Danish composer.<br />

The array ofMendelssohn compositions is enormous presumably, most people know him because<br />

in his 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' he included the wedding march which many married<br />

couples have delighted in hearing as a postlude while leaving the church after their wedding.<br />

This motet might be called Cecilia music, with reference to C6cile Jeanrenaud, Mendelssohn's<br />

wife. The words derive from the 55th Psalm.<br />

Gunnar Svensson<br />

Gunnar Svensson, bom on 5 December 1935, studied <strong>Music</strong> Pedagogy at the Royal Danish<br />

School of Educational Studies, including a period of studies in Hungary, and having graduated as<br />

a precentor, he studied choral conducting in England, where he attended the practice of choirs<br />

such as King's College Choir, Cambridge, New College Choir, Oxford, and the London Chorale.<br />

He has been the condcutor of the choir heard on the present CD since 1972.<br />

Besides, Gunnar Svensson is an organist and has recorded CDs ofDanish romantic organ music<br />

(DACOCD 431 and445) as well as French baroque music: Couperin's two organ masses<br />

(DACOCD 514 and 515).<br />

Frederik Magle, born on 1'l April 1977 in Stubbekobing, where his father was organist. As child<br />

he evinced compositional talents for his first piano pieces his father wrote the notes Frederik<br />

had not yet leamt how to wdte music!<br />

Frederik Magle studied composition with Ib Ngrholm and LeilThybo. In 1988 his mini-musical<br />

'A Christmas Child' and the cantata for Advent, 'We Are Afraid', were performed by a l00-strong<br />

body in a crammed Grundtvigskirken.<br />

In the Cathedral of Riga in 1993, Frederik Magle gave the first perfbrmance of his organ<br />

symphony 'Let There be Light', and his LEGO Fantasy fbr piano and orchestra he has recorded<br />

on a CD with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by David Pany.<br />

In 1996, when Copenhagen was European City of Culture, Frederik Magle was requested to write<br />

his Christmas cantata 'A Newborn Babe before Eternity God'.<br />

Currently he is at work on his first symphony.
