The thesis investigates the conditions under which new residents are welcomed in two
social housing neighborhoods in the municipality of Høje-Taastrup. Using Bourdieu’s
concepts in a scaled down framework, we examine (1) the values of the institutions of
the Danish social housing faced with the challenge of segregation in the Danish
housing market and the associated problems of crime and poverty. Next, (2) we
analyze the doxa of the areas in order to understand how the values of the institutions
are received by the residents, and how the concrete institutions of the area
complement this. Then (3) we profile four different residents who moved to the area
recently, in order to show the complexities associated with relocation within a
segregated housing market, as well as understanding the particular welcoming of the
individuals interviewed. Finally we discuss the possibility of improving the
welcoming of new residents. Stressing that know-how of institutions plays a major
role in social structure of the neighborhoods, the study concludes among other things
that the residents tendency to emphasize the physical conditions of their apartments
holds a potential for greater social integration.
