Jonas Monrad Hansen
postindustrielle by i stigende grad synes at gennemgå parallelt med deres fysiske omdannelse.
ABSTRACT: Inspired by the critical discourse analyst Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional
analytical model, which combines discursive and non-discursive analytical levels in a
comprehensive analysis of society, this thesis seeks to analyze the distinctive transformation of
significant meaning, which urban spaces in the post industrial city increasingly seem to realize in
parallel with their physical reorganization. Among others this analysis takes its basis in the
theoretical idea concerning ‘representations of space’ and through an analytical discussion within
the frame of the concept of ‘the entrepreneurial city’ and by augmenting theories of ‘gentrification’
with other relevant theories relating to contemporary society, it is determined, that the distinct
transformation of significant meaning may be considered a consequence of a discursive urban
development practice, which particularly seen in the light of the prevailing competition between
cities and the need to enhance the city’s general attractiveness contributes added positive sign-value
to central urban spaces. While the physical reorganization involves the primary aesthetization of the
built environment, the directed discursive construction of image, which in the last part of the thesis
is considered through specific text analysis, is seen as a secondary process of aesthetization, which
i.a. has the ideological effect, that the gentrification of the urban space is depicted as uniquely
positive, ‘natural’, hard to criticise, and very fascinating.
