in the conditions of the common people. He appeared at all types of events, covering
different sports, agriculture, industrial exhibitions, and much more. He had the common
touch and the population could relate to him. He fulfilled their expectations which
emphasized the connection between the monarch and the people. He was accessible and
yet stood out.
The royal visits to the market towns of Jutland and Schleswig-Holstein not only
revealed the population’s expectations of the king, but also exposed the royal self-
perception. These visits played an important role in the continuation of the Danish
monarchy as they kept the monarchy aware of population’s expectations and enabled the
monarch to adapt to present conditions and the surrounding society and hence ensured the
continuous success of the Danish monarchy.
